To The Torah And The Testimony

To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
(Isa 8:20 RNKJV)

To the Torah and to the Testimony! If they do not speak according to this Word, it is because there is no light to them! (Isa 8:20 HRB)

For it is: command upon command, command upon command, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little.
(Isa 28:10 The Scriptures 1998+)

But the Word of יהוה was to them, “Command upon command, command upon command, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little,” so that they go and shall stumble backward, and be broken and snared and taken captive.
(Isa 28:13 The Scriptures 1998+)

This is the standard by which we should "rightly divide the word of truth" (2Ti 2:15).

And study to present yourself approved to YAHWEH, a workman unashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.
(2Ti 2:15 HRB)

Please see:

But how does one really do it? In light of the many false teachers among us, it is very important that the man of Yah understand thoroughly the "words" etymologically.

Please also see:

So it bears repeating that the man of Yah MUST master the "dividing of the word of truth". Because these false teachers among us are very cunning. Because they are the agents of Satan.

They know how the mind works. And they use the Bible thoroughly, twisting doctrines.

And normally, they will lure a third person into their discussion, and throw out so many conflicting ideas, allowing the third person -- you normally -- to make conclusions. And then draw their conclusions based on the discussion. And this is one way "dogmas" are implanted.

And this is how most churches, if not all, are taught to teach doctrines. Burying the standard cleverly even using that very verse openly but forgoing the "dividing" of the word through or by way of a discussion.

And this is the ways of this world that many churches, if not all, already adopt.

In this essay let us dissect the words "Torah" and then "testimony". Let us start first with the word "Torah".

What is "Torah"?

Torah can mean many different things depending on the context.

  • 1} Torah (/ˈtɔːrə/; Hebrew: תּוֹרָה, "Instruction", "Teaching") Which has been translated into Greek as "nomos"G3551 meaning "law".

The word "Torah" in Hebrew is derived from the root ירה, which in the hif'il conjugation means "to guide/teach" (cf. Lev 10:11). The meaning of the word is therefore "teaching", "doctrine", or "instruction"; the commonly accepted "law" gives a wrong impression.[7]

  • 2} Technically the Torah is the first five books of Moses in the Tanakh or the Old Testament. The five books of Moses given (spoken, dictated) by YHWH to Moses. The "Word of YHWH".

So therefore, when you encounter the word "law" in the Bible, it means the "five books of Moses". Yahushua referred to it as "the Word" with a capital "W" (Jn 17:14,17).

“I have given them Your Word, and the world hated them because they are not of the world, as I am not of the world.
    (Joh 17:14 The Scriptures 1998+)

“Set them apart in Your truth – Your Word is truth.1
    Footnote: 1See Ps. 119:142, 151.
    (Joh 17:17 The Scriptures 1998+)

The rest of the books of the Bible are "inspired" and called the Testimony. However, traditionally the Old Testament or the Tanakh is also sometimes referred to as the Torah or the Scriptures.

  • 3} The "Divine Instructions, the Will, or the Law or the Commands, the Word" of YHWH stored in the ark.

The Torah, which is stored in the ark, is a large scroll of parchment upon which a specially trained Scribe (Sofer) wrote the Five Books of Moses by hand. ...

  • 4} Torah is the Way:

“Do not let this Book of the Torah depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you guard to do according to all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and act wisely.
    (Jos 1:8 The Scriptures 1998+)

Blessed are the perfect in the way, Who walk in the Torah of יהוה!
    (Psa 119:1 The Scriptures 1998+)

Remove from me the way of falsehood, And favour me with Your Torah.
    (Psa 119:29 The Scriptures 1998+)

“But you, you have turned from the way, you have caused many to stumble in the Torah. You have corrupted the covenant of Lĕwi,” said יהוה of hosts.
    (Mal 2:8 The Scriptures 1998+)

“And this I confess to you, that according to the Way which they call a sect, so I worship the Elohim of my fathers, believing all that has been written in the Torah and in the Prophets,
    (Acts 24:14 The Scriptures 1998+)

  • 5} Torah is Truth:

“And You came down on Mount Sinai, and spoke with them from the heavens, and gave them straight right-rulings and Torah of truth1, good laws and commands.
Footnote: 1Traditionally rendered laws of truth, of which we also read in Mal. 2:6, while it is rendered in Rom. 2:20 as the truth in the law.

    (Neh 9:13 The Scriptures 1998+)

Your righteousness is righteousness forever, And Your Torah is truth.
    (Psa 119:142 The Scriptures 1998+)

“As it is written in the Torah of Mosheh, all this evil has come upon us, and we have not entreated the face of יהוה our Elohim, to turn back from our crookednesses, and to study Your truth.
    (Dan 9:13 The Scriptures 1998+)

“The Torah of truth1 was in his mouth, and unrighteousness was not found on his lips. He walked with Me in peace and straightness, and turned many away from crookedness.
    Footnote: 1 Neh. 9:13.
    (Mal 2:6 The Scriptures 1998+)

for the Torah was given through Mosheh – the favour and the truth came through יהושע Messiah.
    (Jn 1:17 The Scriptures 1998+)

    Footnote: Ps. 147:19, Rom. 3:2, Rom. 9:4.
    (Rom 2:20 The Scriptures 1998+)

  • 6} Torah is Life:

For the command is a lamp, And the Torah a light1, And reproofs of discipline a way of life,
    Footnote: 1 Ps. 119:105.
    (Pr 6:23 The Scriptures 1998+)

The Torah of the wise is a fountain of life, Turning one away from the snares of death.
    (Pr 13:14 The Scriptures 1998+)

For the Torah of the Spirit of the life in Messiah יהושע has set me free from the law of sin and of death.
    (Rom 8:2 The Scriptures 1998+)

  • 7} Torah is the "Word of YHWH" that became flesh, became the "Living, Walking Torah", Yahushua Messiah, who dwelt among mankind. Who speaks only the "Torah", the "Words of the Father". Who also says to "Guard my commands" -- such as -- "be righteous, be perfect, I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life".

‘I shall raise up for them a Prophet like you out of the midst of their brothers. And I shall put *My Words* in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him.
    (Deut 18:18 The Scriptures 1998+)

‘And it shall be, the man who does not listen to *My Words* which He speaks in My Name, I require it of him.
    (Deut 18:19 The Scriptures 1998+)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with Elohim, and the Word was Elohim.
    (John 1:1 The Scriptures 1998+)

He was in the beginning with Elohim.
    (John 1:2 The Scriptures 1998+)

All came to be through Him,1 and without Him not even one came to be that came to be.
    Footnote: 1 Eph. 3:9, Col. 1:16, Heb. 1:2, Heb. 11:3, 2 Peter 3:5, Ps. 33:6.
    (John 1:3 The Scriptures 1998+)

    (John 14:6 RNKJV)

Yahshua answered and said to him, If anyone loves Me, he will keep My Word, and My Father shall love him. And We will come to him and will make a dwelling place with him.
    (John 14:23 HRB)

The one who does not love Me does not keep My Words. And the Word which you hear is not Mine but of the Father who sent Me.
    (John 14:24 HRB)

and having been dressed in a robe dipped in blood – and His Name is called: The Word of יהוה.1
    Footnote: 1John 1:1 & 14.
    (Rev 19:13 The Scriptures 1998+)

    Origin & Preexistence

Jewish tradition holds that "Moses received the Torah from Sinai," yet there is also an ancient tradition that the Torah existed in heaven not only before God revealed it to Moses, but even before the world was created.

In rabbinic literature, it was taught that the Torah was one of the six or seven things created prior to the creation of the world. According to Eliezer ben Yose the Galilean, for 974 generations before the creation of the world the Torah lay in God's bosom and joined the ministering angels in song. Simeon ben Lakish taught that the Torah preceded the world by 2,000 years and was written in black fire upon white fire. Akiva called the Torah "the precious instrument by which the world was created". Rav said that God created the world by looking into the Torah as an architect builds a palace by looking into blueprints. It was also taught that God took council with the Torah before He created the world.

  • 8} Torah literally means "to hit the mark".

The Hebrew word, torah (תורה), is derived from a root that was used in the realm of archery, yareh (ירה). Yareh means to shoot an arrow in order to hit a mark. The mark or target, of course, was the object at which the archer was aiming. Consequently, torah, one of the nouns derived from this root, is, therefore, the arrow aimed at the mark, The target is the truth about "God" and how one relates to Him. The torah is, therefore, in the strict sense instruction designed to teach us the truth about "God". Torah means direction, teaching, instruction,or doctrine.
    -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torah
"God" here refers to YHWH, our Elohim, Praise His Name!

The root word for sin or lawlessness (châṭâ'H2398) in Hebrew means "to miss" the mark.

Now, Isa 8:20, cleared:

To the "Torah" -- instruction or teaching of YHWH given to Moses, found in the first five books of the Tanakh or the Old Testament, and also expounded by Yahushua Messiah -- and the "Testimony" -- the Old and the New Testament that bears Testimony to the instructions or teachings from the Word (Torah). If they do not speak according to this word, it is because they are ignorant.

Therefore, any teaching or instruction that is not found in the "first five books of Moses" first. In other words not taught by Moses. And further Yahushua Messiah did not teach it. Then it is because the one who teaches it do not have the light -- meaning -- they are ignorant.

The word "instruction" in this context means "direction or order". The word "teaching" in this context means "ideas or principles taught by an authority". In this case the "authority" here is "The Torah", "Moses", Yahushua Messiah, or the "Word of YHWH" or "Thus saith YHWH".

The "Torah" is "the Word of Yah". Outside of the Torah, the Prophets and Writings would say "Thus saith Yah" if it comes from Yah through visions and dreams. Only Moshe and Yahushua did Yah spoke the Word directly. (Deut 34:10, Jn 14:24, Heb 1:1,2)

And since then no prophet has arisen in Yisra’ĕl like Mosheh, whom יהוה knew face to face,
(Deu 34:10 The Scriptures 1998+)

“He who does not love Me does not guard My Words. And the Word which you hear is not Mine but of the Father Who sent Me.
(Joh 14:24 The Scriptures 1998+)

Elohim, having of old spoken in many portions and many ways to the fathers by the prophets,
(Heb 1:1 The Scriptures 1998+)

has in these last days spoken to us by the Son, whom He has appointed heir of all, through whom also He made the ages,1
Footnote: 1John 1:3.
(Heb 1:2 The Scriptures 1998+)

The "Word of Yah" is already given and written to Moses, the Prophets and Yahushua. Any revelations today we should be able to find confirmations from the written "Word", otherwise it did not come from Yah.

So, in other words, ANY teachings or instructions or doctrines that these authorities did not teach. If one cannot conclude with a "Thus saith YHWH" with it. Then it is twisted truth.

Yahushua, in His last days with His disciples has always stress to them to "guard", to "keep", "my commands". The word "command" means "give an authoritative orders". Guard means "watch over in order to protect or control". Keep means "have or retain possesion of".

And His "commands" are the "Word of YHWH". In the beginning, the "Word of YHWH" is the "Torah" that became flesh, who is the "Living, Walking Torah" who also said: "guard or keep my commands -- instructions or teachings".

The Testimony

Next, the "Testimony". In this context it means "evidence" or "affirmation". We should be able to find "Testimonies" in the rest of the Bibles, through the Writings, the Prophets, the Apostles, from the early believers of Yahushua and Yahushua Messiah.

The "Torah" and the "Testimony" shall established the truth. If both do not agree with what is being taught, then it is a twisted truth. Twisted because false teachers would use the Bible to teach fiction out of the Bible.

Example fiction doctrines are the purgatory and the doctrine of the "Godhead" -- "Trinity or Binity", ceremonial law, moral law and the like.

One must ask, did Moses teach the [doctrine]? Did Yahushua teach it? Did the apostles teach it?

If the answer IS NOT a "direction or order" by Moses in the "Torah", or by Yahushua Messiah, or by the Apostles. Then the [doctrine] is a twisted truth and is of the devil.

If the answer IS a conjecture and NOT a "direction or order and/or not written and taught" by Moses, nor by Yahushua, nor by the Apostles, then it is a twisted truth.

YHWH Bless you!!!
